Pseudo-Muslims, Pseudo-Events and True Cries of Foul

All the praises and thanks be to Allaah, Sustainer of the Universe, and blessing and salutation to be the most distinguish of the Messengers and foremost among the Prophets, our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allaah be on him and on his wives, children and Companions.

It would be fair to say that until recently we have been justified in believing Abraham Lincoln’s familiar maxim:  You may fool all the people some of the time; but you can even fool some of the people some of the time; but you can’t fool al of the people all the time.  This is because there is a clear and visible distinction between sham and reality, between the lies a demagogue would have us believe and the truths that are there all the time. Also people tend to prefer reality to sham, that if offered a choice between simple truth and a contrived image, they will prefer the truth.

Neither of these any longer fits the facts. Not because people are less intelligent or more dishonest. Rather because of great-unforeseen changes and the great forward strides of information outlets like Newspapers, TV, Radio and most importantly the Internet, which have blurred the edges of reality. This has definitely given an overwhelming boast to Pseudo-Muslims to publicize their Pseudo-events that flood our consciousness, which are not true at all.

One of such example is a recent Pseudo-events in which a female Pseudo-Muslimah has led a mixed congregation of Friday Prayers, claiming it to be in accordance of Islaamic Shariah. The irony of this event is that, this Pseudo-Muslimah (Dr. Aminah Wudud) is known to advocate the following, while still fallaciously taken as a Muslim.

  1. This woman disagrees with the Qur’aanic ruling (Hudd punishment) mandating cutting off the hand of a thief, because she believes that cutting off someone's hand is brutal behavior.

2.      This woman professor says that if a Muslim finds difficulty understanding some verses of the Qur’aan, it is permissible to reject these verses of the Glorious Qur’aan.

3.      This woman was asked about implementation of Islamic laws in Canada, she rejected this suggestion, but in the same lecture, she gave her support to same sex marriages.

The only thing that prevented the obvious and let this Pseudo-Muslim female thrive, is Muslims’ apparent ignorance of their own Deen-ul-Islaam, which failed to see the obvious that is as follows:

The Glorious Qur'aan uses the word Kufr كفر to denote people who cover up or hide realities. The Qur’aan uses this word to identify those who denied Allaah's favors by not accepting His Dominion and Authority. Kufr كفر thus, is an antonym for Imaan ايمان or disbelief in Allaah and a Kafir كافر is a non-believer. This type of Kufr كفر is called AL-KUFR UL AKBAR or major kufr. There are many types of Al-Kufr ul Akbar; however, this pseudo Muslimah is guilty of committing the following types of Al-Kufr ul Akbar based on three violations of Islaamic Shariah شريعه.

1. Kufrul-'Inaad:

Disbelief out of stubbornness. This applies to someone who knows the truth and admits to knowing the truth and admits to knowing it with his/her tongue, but refuses to accept it and refrains from making a declaration. Allaah (swt) says: Throw into Hell every stubborn disbeliever [Surah Qaaf (50), Ayah 24]

2. Kufrul-Inkaar:

Disbelief out of denial. This applies to someone who denies with both heart and tongue.

Allaah (swt) says: They recognize the favors of Allah, yet they deny them. Most of them are disbelievers. [Surah Nahl (16), Ayah 83]

3. Kufrul-Nifaaq:

Disbelief out of hypocrisy. This applies to someone who pretends to be a believer but conceals his disbelief. Such a person is called a MUNAFIQ or hypocrite.

Allaah (swt) says: Verily the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of Hell. You will find no one to help them. [Surah An Nisaa (4), Ayah 145]

4. Kufrul-Istihaal:

Disbelief out of trying to make HARAAM into HALAAL. This applies to someone who accepts as lawful (Halaal) that which Allah has made unlawful (Haraam) like alcohol or adultery. Only Allaah (swt) has the prerogative to make things Halaal and Haraam and those who seek to interfere with His right are like rivals to Him and therefore fall outside the boundaries of faith.

5. Kufrul-Kurh:

Disbelief out of detesting any of Allaah’s (swt) commands. Allaah (swt) says: Perdition (destruction) has been consigned to those who disbelieve and He will render their actions void. This is because they are averse to that which Allah has revealed so He has made their actions fruitless. [Surah Muhammad (47), Ayah 8-9]

6. Kufrul-Istihzaha:

Disbelief due to mockery and derision.

Allaah (swt) says: Say: Was it at Allah, His signs and His apostles that you were mocking? Make no excuses. You have disbelieved after you have believed. [Surah Taubah (9), ayah 65-66]

7. Kufrul-I'raadh:

Disbelief due to avoidance. This applies to those who turn away and avoid the truth.

Allaah (swt) says: And who is more unjust than he who is reminded of his Lord's signs but then turns away from them. Then he forgets what he has sent forward (for the Day of Judgment) [Surah Kahf (18), Ayah 57]

8. Kufrul-Istibdaal:

Disbelief because of trying to substitute Allaah's Laws. This could take the form of: (a) Rejection of Allaah's law (Shariah) without denying it (b) Denial of Allaah's law and therefore rejecting it, or (c) Substituting Allaah's laws with man-made laws.

Allaah (swt) says: Or have they partners with Allaah who have instituted for them a religion, which Allaah has not allowed. [Surah Shuraa (42), Ayah 8]

Allaah (swt) says: Say not concerning that which your tongues put forth falsely (that) is lawful and this is forbidden so as to invent a lie against Allah. Verily, those who invent a lie against Allah will never prosper. [Surah Nahl (16), Ayah 116]

We as Muslims must explore that how and why we failed to see this coming and what led us to take this lightly or under estimate the seriousness of such gross disregard to Islaamic teachings. In my humble opinion, we Muslims must admit our apparent ignorance of the teachings of Islaam. This is about time when we dedicate and focus to the greatest Jihaad of our time جهاد i.e. going back to our sacred sources of Glorious Qur’aan and Sunnah and augmenting our understanding according to Glorious Qur’aan Ayaah آيه 9:122, which reads:

Surah At-Taubah 122

And it is not (proper) for the believers to go out to fight (Jihād) all together. Of every troop of them, a party only should go forth, that they (who are left behind) may get instructions in (Islāmic) religion, and that they may warn their people when they return to them, so that they may beware (of evil).

The Ayaah آيه clearly defines and decrees the obligation of acquiring the religious knowledge for Muslims and its etiquettes as well.  The Fard al-Ain فرض العين (Individual Obligation) on every Muslim man and woman to acquire:

  1. Correct and authentic Aqa’id (beliefs).
  2. Rules of Taharah (purity) and Najasah (impurity).
  3. Salah (Prayers), Sawm (fasting) and all Ibadaat made fardh (obligatory) or Wajib (necessary) by the Shariah.
  4. Things declared to be Haraam (unlawful) or Makruh (reprehensible or repugnant)
  5. The rulings and injunctions of Zakah (prescribed alms) on the part of one who owns property or wealth above the fixed Nisaab or threshold.
  6. The ruling and injunctions of Hajj on the part of one who has the capacity of performing Hajj, for it is his individual obligation on him or her.
  7. The ruling and injunctions of sale and lease (Bai and Ijarah) on the part of one who has to buy and sell or run a business or industry or work on wages or salary, for it is his individual obligation to do that.
  8. The rulings and injunctions of Nikah (Marriage) when getting married and of Talaaq (divorce) as well.

The Curriculum of the ‘Ilm of Deen

Readers must notice that Glorious Qur’aan has used one single word in Ayaah آيه 9:122 to tell the Believers about the essence of the knowledge or science of religion, and its curriculum as well.

This is because that Ilm of Deen means to create the understanding of the religion. This is the exact translation of the word تفقه (tafaqquh) in the Ayaah آيه 9:122, which is a derivation from فقه (fiqh), which essentially means understanding and comprehension. That is why Glorious Qur’aan has said: لِيَتَفَقَّهُوا فِي الدِّينِ (So that they may acquire a perfect understanding of the Faith)

Had this been true, the cries of foul would be been cheers of joy; since the perfect understanding of Deen-ul-Islaam would have enabled Muslims to impeach and/or quash any notion and/or act contrary to the teachings of Islaam before it even started. We can prevent such things from happening in the future, for which we must turn back to Glorious Qur’aan and Sunnah and strictly adhere to both. Let us not forget Allaah’s open and timeless promise to us, as we read in the Glorious Qur’aan:

Surah An-Nur 55

Allāh has promised those among you who believe and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the land, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practice their religion which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islām). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me. But whoever disbelieves after this, they are the Fāsiqūn (rebellious, disobedient to Allāh).

In the above Ayah (verse) Allaah (SWT) has promised.

1.                  Make them leaders.

2.                  Establish for them their Deen, which Allaah has approved for them.

3.                  Give then safety and peace after fear.

4.                  They will worship only Allaah (SWT).
